Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides)

The largemouth bass is a freshwater fish in the sunfish family Centrarchidae and the Micropterus genus. Micropterus meaning small winged, is a mistaken label due to the damaged dorsal fin on an early specimen. Salmoides meaning having the form of salmon, a nod to a local common name of fish as a trout. (they are not closely related to trout)

Where to Find Largemouth Bass

Native range consists of much of central and eastern United States. The largemouth bass is the most popular freshwater game fish and has been stocked and introduced across the USA. You can find them in streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. You won't typically won't find them in high gradient or fast current streams, as they generally prefer slower waters.

When to Fish For Largemouth Bass

Can be fished for all year long. Most productive times are when water temps are > 50F. Ice fishing for them can be more challenging than other species. Most people focus on spring through fall instead.

What Tackle to Use for Largemouth

The largemouth bass's large mouth accommodates the widest array of fishing lures out there. You can use bigger bass specific lures or use smaller tackle for species such as trout. Trophy largemouth bass are largely piscivorous and live fish are a favorite of bait fisherman.
