What is Fishing Tackle?

Fishing tackle (or simply tackle when used in context) refers to any of the equipment one needs or uses while fishing. It is analogous to how you might say gear or kit when referring to the equipment needed for a sport or hobby. The exact origin of the word isn't confirmed but is likely from the Middle Ages in Europe. In North America, fishing gear more typically refers to the equipment used by commercial fishermen while fishing tackle means recreational but it's not a hard and fast rule.

Fishing tackle can refer to any equipment used including but not limited to rods, reels, line, lures, hooks, jackets, waders, gloves, buckets, knives, gaffs, swivels, and weights. People often qualify tackle with whatever use or purpose they are going for such as freshwater tackle, saltwater tackle, fly tackle, ultralight tackle, heavy tackle, etc.

Fishing tackle can be purchased from various shops. Often large general retailers such as Walmart will have a fishing section and also sporting goods stores like Dick's. Local independent bait and tackle shops spread across the USA are another source. For those with no local brick-and-mortar options, there are many online shops where you can buy any tackle you desire.
