Offshore fishing is a loose categorization of saltwater fishing. The minimum distance "off" shore to qualify is debated, but what is agreed upon is that it is fishing from a boat in the open ocean. Species typically targeted include deep-dwelling bottom fish and large pelagic game fish. Popular target species include tuna, marlin, mahi mahi, sharks, and tilefish.
Offshore fishing is typically done in large, expensive boats that can travel far distances and handle ocean conditions in relative comfort. For anglers that don't own such a boat, they can still get in on the action by paying for a fishing charter to go offshore fishing.
Offshore fishing contrasts with inshore fishing in terms of locations and typical targetted species.
