Yellow Perch (Perca flavescens)

The yellow perch is a freshwater fish in the genus Perca. Perca just means perch in Latin, with earlier origins meaning colored /speckled / spotted. Perca also includes the European perch and the Balkhash perch, the yellow perch being the only one native to North America. Flavescens is simply a reference to the color, meaning to become yellow.

Where to Find Yellow Perch

The native range of yellow perch is much of the north half of the United States extending into Canada. Yellow perch are currently and historically a popular fish to stock and show up in waters all across the USA and Canada. Yellow perch are generally regarded as a lake-dwelling fish but can also show up in slow-moving rivers and streams or even smaller ponds.

When to Fish for Yellow Perch

Can be fished for all year long. Most productive times are when water temps are > 50F. In winter can be taken through the ice or open water.

What Tackle to Use for Yellow Perch

You can use a wide variety of tackle for yellow perch including panfish, trout, crappie, and sunfish tackle. Popular natural baits include live minnows or worms. For optimal hook size, you don't have to worry too much as yellow perch have a decent-sized mouth.
